The Capital
A pretty unique city, destroyed by the earthquakes of ’48 and ’53, it has been totally rebuilt from its rubble, so it looks different from any other Greek city.
The Venetian-style canal was built by the Venetians themselves, giving the ancient city a strong Italian imprint.
Just outside the town is the lagoon, a protected area where various birds nest, including herons, cormorants and flamingos. 8000 of the 1000 Lefkadians live in the capital, making it lively even out of season.
